Old Post- Memebox

/ Monday, November 2, 2015 /
I bought a Sunscreen Memebox in June of this year... and here are the products...

This is just for those who are interested and want to learn more about Memebox!

Basically, Memebox are boxes of curated products that are from Asia. They ship promarily the US and shipping is FAST.

They offer pretty good deals. Memebox sells boxes as well as individual products.

Here's what I got from them before...

Highly suggested! I got all of this for $45 - when the ampoule itself retails for $25. and other products for at least $10 each. w00t!

I'm back! + Monthly Favorites

/ Thursday, August 14, 2014 /
I've been gone for quite awhile but I've come back into action!

Yes, it's been awhile, so I'll add in a new post with some of my monthly favorites (of all sorts).

Elta MD sunscreen - goes on super smooth, does not make me break out, and has a high SPF!

Dariya Japan Hair/fringe Grip Magic Clip - 3pcs
Link

Dariya Hair Fringe Grip - super useful for holding onto hair (get those strands out of the way) when applying makeup

Link
Coastal Scents 12 Piece Brush Set - Great for travel and super affordable ($18 for 12 brushes)!. The brush hair is extremely soft. The only downside is that there is some brush fallout (hairs coming out) when washing and that when first opened, the brushes smelled a bit funky (chemical scent). After a wash though, they were fine =D
Link
Hario Chacha Kyusu Maru Tea Pot - Made of glass with a large net to brew tea!

Link

Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Vitality Facial Serum - super awesome facial serum for prepping my face. Also sold at Whole Foods

Link

Etude House Dear My Blooming Lips - #OR204 Bashful Coral - Recently I've been getting into Korean cosmetics, and this is an interesting product I purchased. It's got a beautiful color and the packaging is sooo cute!

Link

Nature's Gate Daily Cleansing Herbal Shampoo - This shampoo is sulfate-free and contains all kinds of goodies to cleanse hair and make it smell good!

Link

Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer SPF 15 - this is an old favorite of mine. It is one of the best sunscreens that has minimal scent and does not give a cakey, thick feeling typical of the stereotypical sunscreen. I've recommended it to several friends and they've all enjoyed using it.

Link

Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in Coconut Lime - This is also an old favorite of mine. It's a great body scrub for desquamating/exfoliating skin (especially areas that are shaved/epilated) and also has a fantastic smell!

Link

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat - I've tried several top coats and so far this has been my favorite one! It helps dry nails super quickly and also gives them a nice glossy finish. I've noticed that my manicures have lasted 2-3 days longer than usual with this top coat.

So there you go! 10 monthly favorites. See ya around!

Review: Philosophy Time In a Bottle

/ Sunday, December 22, 2013 /
Source
FTC: I received a sample of this product from Sephora. I am not compensated for any reviews.

You know that phrase that goes Tempus fugit? For those who don't know Latin, it means Time Flies.

And boy oh boy does it fly.

I've noticed this fact especially recently in the last few years. Med school has been very time-consuming and stressful, and my face shows its effects. People have always stated that I have a youngish-looking face and that although I look like "I am in high school" I could say that I was "30 when I am 40", and that I will enjoy it in the end.

Honestly though, I think time is catching up with me. Med school is med school. Stress is stress. And honestly, it shows.

In (a perhaps futile) effort to limit this aging, I have been trying different serums and other anti-aging products. Thus, when I received a generous sample of this product from Sephora, I was super excited to try it.

Ingredients:

Water, Dimethicone, Alcohol Denat., Bis-Peg-18 Methyl Ether Dimethylsilane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Peg-8, Butylene Glycol, Polyethylene, Glycerin, Dimethiconol, Methoxy Peg-18, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract, Pongamia Pinnata Seed Extract, Angelica Archangelica Root Extract, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Peel Extract, Punica Granatum Fruit Extract, Plankton Extract, Ptfe, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Squalane, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Tocopherol, Polysorbate 60, Lecithin, Sclerotium Gum, Hydrolyzed Soy Flour, Retinyl Palmitate, Propylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Micrococcus Lysate, Bacillus Ferment, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Maltodextrin, Trisodium Edta, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Disodium Edta, Sodium Phosphate, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Sorbic Acid, Adenosine, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Parfum/Fragrance, 1,2-Hexanediol, Silica, Xanthan Gum, Ascorbic Acid, Lactic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Alcohol, Acetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Bht, Mica, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891).

A cursory glance reveals that there are a lot of vitamin c-based ingredients as well as silicone protectants and retinyl palmitate. I understand that these sort of serums are normally supposed to be worn underneath sunscreen but because this product contains retinyl palmitate, I would recommend against it as this can increase the chance of skin cancer. Arghs.

Anyway, onward with the review!

What did I think of it after a week's worth of use?

Pros:
  • Very soothing product
  • Not sticky, very moisturizing
  • Did not break me out
  • Made my skin feel tight and hydrated (even if it was temporary)
Cons:
Honestly if I had a lot of dough I would think that this baby is worth shelling out the bucks for. But unfortunately in my case the price is a doozy. Thus, onward with the next product to review!

The Sunscreen Project, Part 37: Summer 2013 Wrap-Up

/ Tuesday, October 29, 2013 /
This past summer and fall, I've reviewed many, many sunscreens. (25 to be exact!) I've also written several articles on sunscreen and what to look for, what to do/not to do, guidelines as updated by the US FDA, etc.

It was really rewarding being able to write all of these reviews, learn about all of these products and the science behind them, and to impart knowledge on anyone who has read (or will read) these posts.

I hope I've been helpful as an enthusiastic up-and-coming med student, patient and mass consumer educator, aficionado and consumer of all sorts.

Clinics is coming up and med school definitely takes a lot of time. Hopefully I will have the time to write more posts in the future.

Here's a wrap-up of everything I've written in these past 2 years, as well as articles I've linked:

Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60+

This is another sunscreen I tried during my Cali trip. Short summary? Tried but failed.

Ingredients:

Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide (4.9%), Zinc Oxide (4.7%)

Inactive Ingredients: Alumina, Arachidyl Alcohol, Arachidyl Glucoside, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Beeswax (Apis Mellifera), Behenyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, BHT, Bisabolol (L-Alpha), Butylene Glycol, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Cetyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Dimethicone PEG 8 Laurate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate (Licorice Root), Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexl Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Isohexadecane, Methicone, Methylisothiazolinone, Pantothenic Acid, PEG 100 Stearate, PEG 8, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Polymethylmethacrylate, Polysorbate 60, Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A), Silica, Stearic Acid, Styrene Acrylates Copolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Trisiloxane, Water, Xanthan Gum

There are no words... to convey how I feel... about this product... exactly...

Pros:
  • Extensive protection with ZnO and TiO2.
  • Didn't cause breakouts [but perhaps that's because I only used it for 1 day].
  • (That's it!)
Cons:
  • Super, SUPER chalky with huge white streaks. HUGE white cast.
  • Did NOT absorb well into the skin. Left huge greasy stains.
  • Vitamin A inside this product. Not good mixing sun protection with this! Like a family member of retinyl palmitate - which is contraindicated in sun protection products...
  • $12 for 3 fl oz  - seriously, the Blue Lizard sunscreen, ounce for ounce, costs around the same price, but is MUCH better...
Bottom line, I don't like this product, and I don't recommend it to anyone unless they want to either (1) look terrible in pictures, (2) look like Edward Cullen all day long, or (3) just have super super sensitive skin and can't tolerate any other product.

The end.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen, SPF 45

This is the second-to-last sunscreen I will review for the Summer 2013 season of The Sunscreen Project. I actually used this sunscreen for quite awhile during my Cali trip in July.

Honestly, I didn't even buy this sunscreen. My best friend from forever brought it along during the trip. He had used this during his mountain hikes, and so far found it to be a good "protector", so I figured it'd be a good try.

Ingredients, from Drugstore.com:

Active Ingredients: Avobenzone (3%), Homosalate (10%), Octisalate (5%), Octocrylene (2.8%), Oxybenzone (6%)

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Silica, Diethylhexyl 2 6 Naphthalate, VP Hexadecene Copolymer, Dimethicone, Ethylhexl Glycerin, Caprylyl Methicone, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexyl Stearate, BHT, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG 100 Stearate, Trideceth 6, Behenyl Alcohol, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Iodopropynyl Butycarbamate, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Fragrance

Pros:

  • Felt light and easy to spread
  • High SPF factor
  • Has both UVA and UVB ray coverage
  • Good price - $10 for 3 fl oz.
Cons:
  • Contains oxybenzone
  • Is a chemical sunscreen, which may irritate sensitive skin types
  • This product stung. Honestly I think it was because I was definitely not used to the more dry Cali climate, but honestly the avobenzone stung my face raw. I remember feeling like I was giving myself hives whenever I put it on (and trust me, the time I got hives was not fun, especially since at the time the eight-year old me did not recognize what it was and did not go to the hospital). On day two of the trip, since my skin hadn't gotten as dry due to the Cali climate, I was okay, but by day 5 of the trip it felt agonizing putting it on every morning.
Ultimately, I think this product is a good thing for those with thick or resilient skin. As for me and my rather sensitized skin, I think I'll pass.

Question from Gossmakeupartist: What are your beauty regrets?

/ Wednesday, September 25, 2013 /
Here's another one from Wayne Goss!

This is a spin-off of a YouTube video originally created by Gossmakeupartist on YouTube, titling, "What are your beauty regrets?"

So thus I decided to also answer this question.

Here are my top beauty regrets:

  1. Not putting sunscreen onto my face and body early on in life - before I got freckles on my face, and for not understanding sunscreen until I was halfway through college.
  2. Not developing a good skincare routine until I was halfway through college, nor understanding proper skincare until that time as well.
  3. Overdesquamating/exfoliating my face when I first developed acne in the 8th grade/9th grade.
  4. Listening to just hearsay and customer reviews rather than understanding the science of how skin really worked and how to take care of myself properly.
  5. Not getting enough sleep in middle and high school and thus developing very large dark circles as a result.
  6. Not eating enough beauty foods and focusing on junk foods. Especially during my younger years.
  7. Not understanding the concept of lotion and once using Listerine as a way to "cleanse" my skin. I ran that stuff over my skin for ~30 min. Argh it burns!
  8. Not being careful during cooking and thus having ultra-scarred hands.
  9. Overplucking my eyebrows and getting ridiculed at.
  10. Using Nair. So itchy!
  11. Using black eyeliner for a brow liner. Hello unibrow Godzilla!
  12. Not blending in my eyeshadow properly.
  13. Using a water-based mascara and not curling my eyelashes beforehand; hello raccoon eyes and watering eyes!
  14. Wearing the wrong shade of concealer (too light).
  15. Sleeping with makeup on (happens more rarely now)
  16. Cutting my nails too short (ouch!)
  17. Leaving on old nail polish for 4+ weeks (hello yellow tinge!)
  18. Not putting Mederma on my old scars.
  19. Picking at my cuticles.
  20. Hunching my back while studying - so bad!!!
So there you go. There are more regrets but these are the ones that come out the fastest. Do y'all have similar regrets?
