To every girl...

/ Thursday, March 31, 2011 /
Here is an inspirational poem/story/sonnet/tribute that I found a few years ago. I found it at a time in my life when I was really down, had low self-esteem and was really hurt but some things that happened to me. This made me feel a lot better in the sense that it reminded me that I was not alone. There were tons of girls who were going through the same or similar feelings, thoughts, emotions as I was. So today I'd like to share this with you. To every girl who is out there, feeling this way, feeling down, in the depths of despair, here is something that I'd like to give, from my heart to yours, to remind you that you are not alone out there, that there is hope, goodness, and happiness.

<3, chynagrl

To every girl that is SCARED to
put her heart out there again,
because she has been HURT
too many times or so badly.

To every girl that
has been cheated on,
because she's not a slut
who gives it up to any guy.

To every girl that
dresses cute,
not like a skank.

To every girl who
wants to be called
beautiful, not hot.

To every girl that will spend her
whole day looking
for the perfect present for you.

To every girl who gets her heart
broken, because he
chose that bitch instead.

To every girl that would die
to have a decent boyfriend.

To every girl who would just once
like to be treated like a princess.

To every girl that cries at night
because of another heartbreak.

To every girl that won't get
down on her knees & open
her mouth just to get a boyfriend.

To every girl that
just wants to hold hands.

To every girl that
kisses him with meaning.

To every girl who
just wishes he cared more.

To every girl who would just
once want a guy to give their
jacket up when they are cold.

To every girl who
just wants him to call.

To every girl who lies
awake at night thinking about him.

To every girl that
just wants to cuddle.

To every girl that
just wants to sleep with
him without having sex.

To every girl who shows how much
she cares and gets nothing back.

To every girl that thought
"maybe this one could be the one."

To every girl that laughs at stupid stuff
when she actually doesn't think it is funny.

To every girl who is just
looking for that one and
only and is having a rough
time along the way.

To every girl that doesn't want
a guy who just plays with her
emotions but actually cares about
how she feels.

To every girl who wants
words backed up with actions.

To every girl that fell for all the lies
only to find themselves alone in the end.

To every girl that gave her heart away
to have it shoved back in her face.

To every girl that has faith that
"tomorrow will be a better day."
And it will be,

THIS ONE IS FOR YOU.

"Asians in the Library" + Tsunami

/ /
Hi Everyone,

Sorry it's been a long time since I last posted. I've been incredibly busy with classes, work, extracurrics, etc etc etc. Life is definitely kinda crazy right now.

I'd like to talk about the Alexandra Wallace youtube video.

So, in case you've been, as the cliche goes, "living under a rock" for the past few weeks, there was a youtube post on the day that the Japan Tsunami/Earthquake hit (March 11) about Asians and how they talk excessively and loudly in the library. There were also slurs of Eastern Asian speech ("ching chong ting tong ling long"). In addition, there were negative perceptions about East Asian students in college housing apartments and how their parents came on the weekends to help them do all of their chores, etc.

Here it is:

Especially in light of the earthquake, the reaction was quite severe. According to several newspaper articles, Ms. Alexandra Wallace, the girl in the video, received death threats, had to cancel and reschedule her exams, and became notorious as a result of the virality of her video on Youtube. She publicly apologized for the statements she made in the video.

My perceptions and judgment? First, yes, there are prejudicial issues involved here, especially with the "Asian relatives from Asia" and "Ching chong ting tong ling long." As a Chinese person, I seriously do not know what that means. I guess the closest thing that relates to "ching chong" is a blatant mispronunciation (Americanized Chinese version) of qing chong (青虫), which literally means "spring bug." "Ting tong" could literally be mispronounced as "listening to children" perhaps, (听同), and "ling long" could be misprounounced as "lifting a dragon" (玲珑 - I know the first character isn't the correct character but right now I can't find the actual one). I know it's just a stereotype, but this is what it really means XD.

Anyways, back to my point. I feel like this situation has gotten out of control. She didn't deserve the death threats, and she's already been punished enough. She had to cancel and reschedule her finals, for heavens sakes. She received a ton of notoriety and it will follow her for many years. And yes, I know for a fact that a lot of Asians DO talk in the library. When I need to talk in the library, I go outside or in the bathroom to talk because I know it's disturbing for other students, but yes, I do have quite a few Asian friends who talk in the library. At the same time, though, I do my own laundry, do not say "ching chong ting tong ling long" (as you can see above, the literal translations for this are kind of ridiculous, especially when put together - spring bug listening to children and lifting a dragon? come on), feel sorry for people in the earthquake (I donated some money to the American Red Cross when my friends held a fundraiser for it), and do not talk in the library.

In short, my evaluation of it is that it happened, and the world has seen it, but there are also other things in life that people need to think about, like the tsunami itself, the nuclear radiation problems in Japan, the conflicts in the Middle East, the economy, rising gas prices, education reform, obesity, and everything else. Let's now concentrate on making the world a better place by working on those issues.

I guess Will Ting really wants to show us how to recycle! My school's now switched to a special form of recycling so that we can recycle just about every type of plastic =D How cool is that for the environment? As the cliché goes, reduce, reuse, recycle!

Tag: Products I regret buying

/ Friday, March 18, 2011 /
Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't written in so long... I've had a TON of exams, quizzes, projects, not to mention my own experiments to set up and conduct. It took FOREVER. Right now I'm exhausted; I've basically pulled 4 consecutive almost all-nighters (sleeping 2-3 hrs each night), and I finally finished my 3rd test a few hours ago, but I thought that I really wanted to get something out to everyone ASAP, so here you go!

There has been a very common tag that I've seen on so many people's sites: the Products I regret buying tag. So here's my own. Please remember that these are my own personal experiences with them, and that my skin type, skin color, age, etc might be very different from other people's.

Oh, sorry: My skin type is normal/combination with a oily t-zone, and I have East Asian skin (of East Asian descent).

Products I regret buying:

1. St. Ives Apricot Scrub: Blemish & Blackhead Control
 http://www.amazon.co.uk/St-Ives-Apricot-Blemish-Blackhead/dp/B000TG863S

This product has lots of little grains for exfoliation, but for me they are just WAY TOO big; the grains really hurt my skin, even the first time I used it. Even if I exfoliated only once a week, it would just scrape my skin raw. Did NOT like that.

2. Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel

dermalogica special cleansing gel http://www.amazon.com/Dermalogica-Special-Cleansing-Gel-8-4/dp/B000PKWAM6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1300427279&sr=8-2

I got this for $33 on the dermalogica website. I figured I'd splurge since my skin at the time was kind of breaking out a lot more than normal, and I figured if something got a ton of rave reviews and was this pricey, it had to have a reason for it, no? WRONG! I feel like this formula might be too gentle for my skin. It's only 0.5% salicylic acid, and that for me isn't enough. I guess the good thing is that the bottle lasts such a long time; you only need a dime size drop every time, and there's a whole 8.4 ounces in the bottle. I guess that's a good thing, but I'd rather go for quality than for quantity, especially after my painful experiences with acne, sooo....

3. Neutrogena Rapid Clear Sore Pimple Gel
NEUTROGENA®Rapid Clear®Sore Pimple Gel http://www.amazon.com/NEUTROGENA-Rapid-Clear-Sore-Pimple/dp/B0038ZWAFW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1300427458&sr=1-2

At the time I bought this, the product had just come out, so I thought "why not?" Well, I've got to tell you that from the first moment I put a little drop of this onto my acne pimples, it stings A TON. It hurts a lot. Then, afterwards, the cooling effect of the gel takes place and it doesn't hurt as bad, but the stuff flakes off of your skin. I just hate the flaking part, especially since if I put it on at night on my face and went to bed, in the morning there might be flakes of it on my pillow. It's kinda disgusting in a way.

4. Revlon Matte Luxurious Color Kohl Eyeliner, Black Truffle

Revlon Matte Luxurious Color Kohl Eyeliner http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/revlon-matte-luxurious-color-kohl-eyeliner-reviews

This product goes on very well, but it smears very easily. In my opinion, it is the same quality as the Wet N' Wild ColorIcon eyeliners, except they only cost $0.99 each, while this one cost $10. I could get 10 of the same thing with the price of one of these. Not so cool. I'm trying to use it up so that I can finally throw it away!

5. E.L.F. Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara
ELF Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/elf-wet-gloss-lash-brow-clear-mascara-reviews

Now, I know I put in an earlier post that I had liked this product, but tell you the truth, this product flakes, dries really hard, and is not useful at all. It's kind of a pain. I'm really glad it was only $1, compared to the $10 eyeliner (now, I know all of these prices are relatively cheap compared to stuff like Lancome and Estee Lauder, but I'm on a poor college student budget, so yeah...). Not recommend to buy it.

6. Theraflu Warming Relief Cold & Chest Congestion, Orange
Theraflu Warming Relief Cold & Chest Congestion, Orange, 8.3-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 2) http://www.amazon.com/Theraflu-Warming-Congestion-8-3-Ounce-Bottles/dp/B002DWA210/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1300427718&sr=8-21

Now, I know this isn't a beauty product, but I just wanted to put this out here because a month ago I had a TERRIBLE cold and this was the only medicine that I could buy at the time, until I got a friend to take me to Target. This thing tastes horrible. You have to drink a lot of it for each proper serving (2 tablespoons; there's a measuring cup to go with it) and it's really hard to gulp down. Not so cool. DayQuil and Nyquil are much better, in my opinion.

So yep, that's it so far guys, thanks for reading this far! Comment if you guys have any products you dislike/regret buying. Doesn't have to be makeup, can be anything!

Chipotle Burritos!

/ Thursday, March 3, 2011 /
Lately, I've been doing so many reviews on makeup and stuff, that I forgot the rest of the world still exists! Because of a BOGO free coupon from Chipotle, I decided today to get some burritos for lunch.

http://couponcravings.com/2010/11/facebook-mobile-buy-free-burritos-chipotle-weekend.html

Who doesn't like these? I got the chicken kind (I'm not a very big beef or pork person, and I like my protein, thank you) and I got all of the hot sauces save the tomatillo one. I'm not very good at eating hot, spicy stuff, so this was considered pretty spicy for me.

Result? Delicious! I love mixing the veggies and the meat together, creating a rice-veggie-meat salad of sorts. I have been craving vegetables for a long time (peanut butter n' jelly sandwiches taste disgusting for me by now) and this is an absolute treat. At the branch I went to, the chicken burritos cost around $6 + tax. Pretty good deal! I think with the BOGO free I can make 4 meals from the 2 burritos I got. That's $6 for 4 meals, or $1.50 per meal. Sweet deal huh?

You can get the Chipotle BOGO free coupon from their Facebook site. But hurry - the deal is only valid through TODAY!

DIY Facials

/ Wednesday, March 2, 2011 /
As a poor college student, I am often in need of solutions to clear my face that are not expensive. I love DIY (Do-It-Yourself) tutorials because these remedies use products that you either already have at home or can get easily and cheaply at the local grocery store. So awesome. I'm going to share with ya'll some of my fave tutorials that I use for this sort of thing.

I'm not going to list all of the instructions for these facials/tutorials, especially since it's 1:30 AM and I'm really tired already. However, I'm going to provide a link with the instructions for these facials and instead just list the remedies that I use from the site.
