Last night, I was talking to my in-laws. I was inquiring as to what envelopes they had, and if we could have some of them, since they almost never write checks, and we have to all the time. But they didn't have the kind we wanted - specifically, security-covered check-sized envelopes.
I responded that we would just go to Amazon to buy them. My father-in-law chuckled.
Every day at my condo complex, hoards of packages come in. Boxes of all shapes and sizes come hither, bringing forth every good one could possibly imagine.
A lot of these customers are young people - people ranging from teenagers to those in their 30s and 40s. Young adults - millennials, as they say - get many, if not most, of their products off of this one site.
Even more than this, lots of other businesses are getting their "business" online. Clothing companies, pet box subscriptions, hardware stores and more - more and more products are being sold online instead of at brick-and-mortar stores.
Why is this? Who's winning? Who's suffering?
For one thing, it seems that millennials today are expected to do MUCH more work than previously expected. What I mean by this is that originally, with the advent of bigger and better technology, people thought that our lives would become easier. Instead, it has triggered a scale of invitations to have more responsibilities and other items to complete. Beforehand, people used to go to the library to look up topics in encyclopedias and journal articles. Now, we can access them at home.
But what is the trade-off? We do have more access to such media. But we are expected, instead, to have more responsibilities. We are allotted shorter amounts of time to access such things and are expected to produce more output, ever day.
Case in point is the modern working mom. My mom works a 60-hour a week job, but still has the responsibilities of all of the cooking and cleaning in the house. (My dad's culinary skills are terrible. Nobody wants to eat what he makes anyway.) How is she able to do this? She multi-tasks almost all of the time - starting the laundry as soon as she gets home, programming the oven so that it automatically turns on/off so that food is not undercooked or overcooked, using a high-tech rice cooker with both "cook" and "keep warm" settings, etc. At the end of the day, she sets on both the laundry machine and the dishwasher so that another load of laundry could be done, and the dishes would be washed overnight.
Her mother, a generation ago, was a full-time homemaker. She needed all of the time during the day, 24/7, to do all of the chores and cooking. She needed more time to change diapers, because she had to wash cloth diapers - unlike the luxury my mom had with disposable diapers. Laundry had to be washed entirely by hand. Technology was less advanced, and that meant that less things could be done at the same time.
Mind you - this was a long time ago, perhaps during the second world war era. So technology wasn't as great as it was now.
But the point is that, despite the fact that my mom needs a lot less time to perform such responsibilities than her mother, she (my mother) is bombarded with more responsibilities in addition. Her full-time job to "bring home the dough" takes up time, and she is also expected to do other things, such as type at a computer, text her children with tons of emojis, etc.
Which gets me back to my original point. Today's generation - nay, everyone living in today's technological world - is expected to do more things. Need to buy groceries? Don't go to the grocery store - use Amazon Pantry instead, so you can save time to do something else. Need a new couch? Don't make the drive out to Ikea - just look online at the reviews and pick one that is to your liking. Even simple things such as buying a present for someone requires only a search and the click of a button, rather than a trip to the mall, complete with used time and gas, etc.
But instead of saying "Yipee! We have more free time!", instead, we are bombarded with more responsibilities. Instead of using that extra time to relax, we're expected to spend more time on our jobs and obtain even more responsibilities than before. For example, as a student, life is filled with endless studying and working at the hospital. When I get home, I run the dishwasher and the laundry, load after load, while cleaning the floor and making coffee by the pot. I continue running the delicates while looking at a book - a book on the iPad. The husband, at work, runs tons of tests on machines at the same time, due to the sheer fact that many, many virtual machines are available for use. He isn't just using ENIAC. He's using i9 or whatever.
So ultimately, what wins? Whose lifestyle and responsibilities are better? Honestly, I don't know. Life is what life is. We are just simply inculcated to the responsibilities we are given. At the end of the day, we just have to do what we need to do. And that's that.

Christmas Wish List 2014 (Dream on...)
I'll probably not be able to receive any of these. I don't expect any of them. I also am too broke to buy anything here. It's okay. It's a distant dream, perhaps for the future =D
Note to all reading this: Please DO NOT buy these for me! Feel free to buy for yourself, but they are waaayyy too expensive and although they are good products, they are way out of my price range and also are luxuries, not needs, for me.

More blog changes
Hey y'all,
Currently I'm trying to work on the blog layout and getting rid of its bugs/kinks. For example, I know that the search function doesn't work very well and stuff, and dpod_the_owl and I will be working to correct these problems. Please bear with us as the site changes!
Note - the overall aesthetic of the blog will not change - I think I've settled (finally!) into a blog style that I feel is both minimalistic and classical. It's just working out the technical bugs that my "tech-ness" (or rather, lack thereof) will work on (actually, it'll probably be dpod's tech prowess).
Toodles!

Question from Secretlifeofabionerd: If you had the money, what would be the one fashion item that you would buy right away??? GO!!!
My friend, KL Cao from Secretlifeofabionerd, recently asked this question on her Facebook site:
If you had the money, what would be the one fashion item that you would buy right away??? GO!!!
My answer? It's conditional.
If you had the money, what would be the one fashion item that you would buy right away??? GO!!!
My answer? It's conditional.
- If I could spend it on anything, I would first spend it on med school tuition. So many loans and $40K+ in debt every year is tough. Just being able to break even for med school would be nice.
- If I had to spend it on fashion things, I would use it on things that are practical. Clinics clothing for medical school (basically, business professional clothing), some nice Clarks or comfortable GB shoes for walking around hospitals in clinics, etc.
- For makeup - lots of waterproof makeup. I've noticed that it lasts longer, wears longer, and I am definitely not one of those girls who is patient enough to touch-up all day long. It's 10 minutes in the morning and out the door I go. Some nice, high-quality MUFE or UD makeup would be nice.
- Or perhaps a nice Tempur-Pedic mattress. My twin-sized mattress is pretty old. Oh well. It still works. And the eggshell mattress pad is a nice bonus.

BTW, it's desquamate, NOT exfoliate - desquamate is getting rid of that top layer of dead skin cells, aka the keratinocytes of the stratum disjunctum. Exfoliate = getting rid of skin all the way to the basale lamina, aka bottom layer of the epidermis - a true horror!!!

Lipgloss - currently on Estee Lauder's Pop Gloss, though usually don't wear it b/c it's too sticky.
I generally stick w/ chapsticks + SPF.

Face: 2-3X/week with facial mask, or facial scrub.Body: in shower, w/ 1:1 aspirin solution (DIY)
Medical terminology:

DIY Aspirin, Honey, Cucumber, Lemon/Lime juice mask
Mario Badescu's Strawberry Facial Scrub (testing)

Face:
Mario Badescu's Cucumber Lotion (testing) + Neutrogena Healthy Skin Ant-Wrinkle (Night cream)
On non-oily parts of face: Origins A Perfect World Antioxidant moisturizer w/ White Tea
Body: Summer = Aveeno lotion, Winter = coconut oil and vitamin E oil, as well as Nivea's Express Hydration Lotion
7) DO YOU HAVE FRECKLES? FACE/BODY?
I have a few freckles on my cheeks (due to Gulf Coast USA sun), but they are barely visible to the naked eye. I don't have any freckles on my body.
8) DO YOU USE EYE CREAM?
I use it intermittently, if I get samples from select companies. However, most of the time I just use my facial moisturizer or sunscreen.
9) DID OR DO YOU HAVE ACNE PRONE SKIN?
Yes! Especially when I am stressed (high levels of cortisol), have not been exercising well, etc. I had moderate to severe acne during late middle school/early high school, but recently, during college years and post-college years, it's gotten better.
10) DID YOU EVER HAVE TO USE PROACTIV?
Nope, never!
11) WHAT FOUNDATION?
Confession: I've never used foundation. I once went to some department store makeup areas and asked them to swatch me (aka find the right shade of foundation) but the saleslady said that I didn't need to wear foundation - my skin was fine the way it was. Since then (and even before then) I've never used it. I've never used powder, BB cream, CC cream or tinted moisturizer either. The only time I've used blush or bronzer was for Halloween - for Halloween makeup to suit my costume.
12) WHAT CONCEALER?
Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer in Cream 4-5 (now discountinued, but you can still buy on Amazon or Ebay)
13) DO YOU KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE COLOR?
Hmm. This is hard. Most people think that all East Asians have yellow skintones. However, as you can see from this article from MusicalHouses by Jerlene Then, that's not really true. I'm not sure whether I'm warm or cool-toned but I definitely have a pink undertone. My skin's gotten lighter than it used to be as well, so it's really different. I think I might have neutral undertones, but emphasis on think.
14) WHAT DO YOU THINK OF FAKE EYELASHES?
I think they're cool, but then again I've never used them.
15) DID YOU KNOW YOUR SUPPOSE TO CHANGE YOUR MASCARA EVERY THREE MONTHS?
Yes. I do throw them out every 3 months - I mark their expiration dates the moment I start using them.
16) WHAT TYPE OF MASCARA DO YOU USE?
Gah, I've tried so many different types. Right now I'm on Neutrogena's Healthy Volume in Carbon Black. I prefer waterproof mascaras because they seem to hold a curl better, and don't melt under hot humid weather.
17) SEPHORA OR MAC?
Sephora - bigger variety!
18) DO YOU HAVE A MAC PRO CARD?
Nope!
19) WHAT MAKE UP TOOLS DO YOU USE WHEN APPLYING MAKE UP
Fingers, brushes, q-tips for removal.
20) DO YOU USE MAKE UP BASE PRIMER FOR THE EYES OR FACE?
Eyes - yes, my DIY primer with 1:1 body butter:concealer. Cheap and effective. Period.
21) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EYESHADOW COLOR OR SHADE?
I have several. I generally prefer neutral colors. Lately I've been using this quad from Estee Lauder (gift) with a bunch of neutral colors. I also like highlight shades from CoverGirl.
22) DO YOU USE PENCIL OR LIQUID EYELINER?
I use liquid for top liner, and pencil for waterline. Sometimes exotic pencil liner colors if I'm feeling adventurous.
23) HOW OFTEN DO YOU POKE YOUR EYES WITH AN EYELINER PENCIL?
I don't think I have? Mascaras - yes I have. Ruined contact lenses....
24) WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PIGMENT EYESHADOWS?
I don't really like them because they get all over the place, and generally need very good brush technique to apply.
25) DO YOU USE MINERAL MAKE UP?
Don't think I've used it before...
26) WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LIPSTICK? LIPGLOSS?
Lipstick - I like Maybelline's Color Sensational line.Lipgloss - currently on Estee Lauder's Pop Gloss, though usually don't wear it b/c it's too sticky.
I generally stick w/ chapsticks + SPF.
27) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BLUSH?
Don't use blush. I've used an ELF blush before for a Halloween costume. I have a Milani Baked Blush in Terra Sole, but it broke!
28) DO YOU BUY YOUR MAKE UP ON EBAY?
Nope!
29) DO YOU LIKE DRUGSTORE MAKE UP?
Yes - it can be just as good as, if not better, than high-end makeup!
30) DO YOU GO TO A CCO?
What's a CCO?
31) DID YOU EVER CONSIDER TAKING MAKE UP CLASSES?
No - most of the stuff I learned came from Youtube. I think it's enough for now.
32) ARE YOU CLUMSY PUTTING ON MAKE UP?
Probably just the mascara, if I'm rushed.
33) NAME A MAKE UP CRIME THAT YOU HATE?
Spidery lashes - too clumped due to mascara.
34) DO YOU LIKE COLORFUL SHADES OF MAKE UP EYESHADOW, LIPSTICK OR NEUTRAL ONES?
Neutrals. They fit work and most daily situations better.
35) WHICH CELEBRITY ALWAYS HAS GREAT MAKE UP?
Probably just about every actress you can name.
36) IF YOU COULD LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH ONE MAKE UP ITEM WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Eyeliner.
37) WOULD YOU LIVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT MAKE UP ON?
Yes. I do so on the weekends.
38) DO YOU THINK YOU LOOK GOOD WITHOUT MAKE UP ON?
I generally think my skin is fine without makeup. I like my eyes with makeup - they look larger and don't make my poofy cheeks look so big!
39) IN YOUR OPINION WHAT IS THE BEST MAKE UP LINE?
There is none. Each brand has different cool things. For makeup products - TheBalm, Estee Lauder, Maybelline
Eyeliner - Bombshell, Clinique, ELF, Urban Decay
Eyeshadow - CoverGirl, Estee Lauder, Wet N' Wild
Eyebrow liner - ELF, Wet N' Wild
Mascara - Maybelline
Lipstick - Revlon, Lancome
Makeup tools - ELF
Skin products - Mario Badescu, Neutrogena, Origins
Sunscreen - Algenist, Elta MD
40) WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MAKE UP?
It's a way to express yourself. Enhance your natural beauty. Give you an external source of confidence - external locus, per se. It's when that external locus turns into an internal locus that is true confidence.

Lately, I've been addicted to black iced tea. Just your average iced tea. I don't like drinking coffee because I usually have to add stuff just to make it drinkable, and even then it tastes bad. Diet coke is pretty bad for you in general, and regular coke/pepsi/dr pepper gets tiring after awhile. For some reason, though, iced tea seems okay. It works on your system more gently, is drinkable without any additives, and still somewhat hydrates me.
What do you guys and gals think? Do you have any addictions that are (at least somewhat) beneficial to your health? Leave a comment below!

some of the best junk food America has to offer...
Yes, I know. Junk food is bad for you. It's got tons of carbs, mostly simple and few complex, tons of sugars, tons of fat, little substantial nutrition. I gotcha.
However, isn't it ok to indulge every once in awhile?
I usually can eat a lot of food. Seriously. Once, during a test study period, with about 5 bananas, I downed an entire bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup. I can eat an entire jar of nutella with lots of peanut butter, nutella, honey, pecans, and banana sandwiches. Ooohhh, yummy.
For my last cell biology test, I ate/drank:
1. An entire family-sized tub of hummus (roasted red pepper flavor)
2. 3 dark chocolate bars
3. 4 Organic yogurts
4. 4 cartons of chocolate milk
5. 2 cups of coffee
6. Lots of crackers
Yeah... you get the picture.
There are definitely some types of junk food that are my all-time favorites, though. These include:
1. Hot cheetos
10. Fried pickles

How to make the best use of your holidays (mainly geared towards college students)
Now that my semester of university is officially "done", I've been at home just doing random things. Since I can't really go anywhere (no car, parents with both cars and always working), I just find ways to entertain myself at home.
Thus, here are also some ways you can entertain yourself at home, college-age appropriate.
1. Cracked.com - this is a site that has a bunch of sarcastic, humorous articles ranging anywhere from current events to videos on controversial topics to sex and beyond. This is a really interesting site that is definitely very interesting to look at.
2. xkcd.com - this is a site that posts humorous nerd comics I believe 3X/week. Really interesting. Comics from this site often include allusions to computer science, hard science, math, etc. You get what I mean. I actually don't understand some of the comic strips, since I am not in those fields, but I understand most of them. Yeah, pretty interesting.
3. phdcomics.com - this is also a site that posts humorous nerd comics, once a week. This is geared more towards hard sciences (especially biology/chemistry) and focuses on graduate students, of course, like the URL of the site says, Ph.D students. Very humorous for nerds. I also understand the stuff.
4. all of the beauty blogs! of course, this is for girls and guys who are interested in these topics. For a list of them, look at the list of beauty blogs I'm subscribed to. There's like a bagillion of them (or rather, more like 50). You can find new looks, new ideas, new trends, etc on them. Always there are new looks to try.
5. news.google.com - this is the site I usually go to to get my daily dose of news. The site can be personalized to whatever YOU want to read. It's always good to keep up with the current news and know about what is going on in the world outside.
6. Take up new hobbies - recently, I started knitting. Granted, this makes me sound like a grandma, but the thing is that it is definitely a good way to pass the time while you are watching TV or something. Also, it builds the dexterity of your hands, which I will definitely need for medical school when handling cadavers and stuff. (Yeah, sorry for that graphic piece of info). Some people do other things, like ice fishing, painting, writing, etc. I also write as well - of course, with part of that on this blog :)
7. Try new recipes for cooking. Or, if you've never cooked before, try cooking. Whether you're a guy or a gal, it's always good to learn this important skill. After all, on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, food and shelter are the main basic things needed for survival. After all, one cannot survive for more than 30 days without food. Whether it's learning to make simply eggs or put together a sandwich or making foie gras and lemon-seared salmon, it's always good to try and learn.
8. Catch up on all of your favorite TV shows. And watch television for the heck of it. Basically, a lot of kids forget about watching television once they go to college. There are so many other things to do on campus; why do this? During my first year in college, when I was not at home, I literally spent at most 30 minutes the entire year watching television. Of course, the only TV screen that was available at my dorm was my roommate's tiny 1.5 ft screen. At home, there's the 42'' plasma. Of course it is more accessible/easier to watch.
9. Hang out with your friends from high school. During the summer holidays, a lot of my friends go across the country or even world to go to their internships and volunteer work, missions work, etc. However, the winter break is really short, and people generally can't go on internships (or at least for my university). Thus, it's a time when most people just go home for the holidays. Visiting old friends from high school is a great way to keep in contact. Meet each other at a restaurant or go to a bowling game together or something. It'll be really fun, I promise!
10. Of course, sleep. During the semester, we're always working and working, and during finals season, our lives are in total havoc with all of our final tests/projects/papers/psets/etc/whatnot. We WILL burn out eventually. The winter holidays are a great opportunity for catching up on all of those lost zzzz's.
So there you go, 10 good ways to spend your winter vacation without really going too far from home. Hope this holiday season is a great one for all of ya'll, and have fun!
