Review: Secret Key Multiple Cell Night Repair Ampoule

/ Monday, November 2, 2015 /
I know guys, I haven't posted a review in a long, long time.
(whoops I know, sideways)

What have I been doing? I've been on rotations, trying to get through high-stakes exams (both written and practical), learning medicine (in general), taking care of my family, wedding planning, etc. Lots and lots of stuffs.

Also, on a side note - I feel like I need more and more sleep all the time. When I was in HS, I could stay up a lot and be fine the next day. Same thing in college. Now? I can barely function properly. I need a lot more sleep. Sound like aging? Yup.

Anyway, I want to review a product I got from Memebox. This is a product that is called an ampoule - similar to a serum, that is meant to be put on after essence. This Asian product is a dupe of Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair. I had previously tried Estee Lauder's serum, but unfortunately it is super super expensive ($92 for 1.7 fl oz on Sephora). So therefore, I decided to go with something that also seemed good.

Pros?
- Price ($25 for a bottle, 1.7 fl oz)
- Packaging - similar to Estee Lauder, although there is no pump, at least if you don't touch the tip, it can suction out product pretty cleanly
- Longevity - I've been using this product for several weeks and have barely made a dent in it!
- Makes my skin feel soft, supple and smooth
- Can be used in daytime and nighttime

Cons?
- Hard to find in US - find on Amazon and other 3rd party websites
- Difficult to recycle packaging - glass packaging (for eco-friendly consumers)

Bottom line - I think I'd like to buy this product again. This is a very nice product for a good price, a good size for a serum that seems to work super well. Yay!

Here's how my skin looks after application. What do you think? Pretty clear? (no makeup on whatsoever)

I'm back! + Monthly Favorites

/ Thursday, August 14, 2014 /
I've been gone for quite awhile but I've come back into action!

Yes, it's been awhile, so I'll add in a new post with some of my monthly favorites (of all sorts).

Elta MD sunscreen - goes on super smooth, does not make me break out, and has a high SPF!

Dariya Japan Hair/fringe Grip Magic Clip - 3pcs
Link

Dariya Hair Fringe Grip - super useful for holding onto hair (get those strands out of the way) when applying makeup

Link
Coastal Scents 12 Piece Brush Set - Great for travel and super affordable ($18 for 12 brushes)!. The brush hair is extremely soft. The only downside is that there is some brush fallout (hairs coming out) when washing and that when first opened, the brushes smelled a bit funky (chemical scent). After a wash though, they were fine =D
Link
Hario Chacha Kyusu Maru Tea Pot - Made of glass with a large net to brew tea!

Link

Avalon Organics Vitamin C Renewal Vitality Facial Serum - super awesome facial serum for prepping my face. Also sold at Whole Foods

Link

Etude House Dear My Blooming Lips - #OR204 Bashful Coral - Recently I've been getting into Korean cosmetics, and this is an interesting product I purchased. It's got a beautiful color and the packaging is sooo cute!

Link

Nature's Gate Daily Cleansing Herbal Shampoo - This shampoo is sulfate-free and contains all kinds of goodies to cleanse hair and make it smell good!

Link

Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer SPF 15 - this is an old favorite of mine. It is one of the best sunscreens that has minimal scent and does not give a cakey, thick feeling typical of the stereotypical sunscreen. I've recommended it to several friends and they've all enjoyed using it.

Link

Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in Coconut Lime - This is also an old favorite of mine. It's a great body scrub for desquamating/exfoliating skin (especially areas that are shaved/epilated) and also has a fantastic smell!

Link

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat - I've tried several top coats and so far this has been my favorite one! It helps dry nails super quickly and also gives them a nice glossy finish. I've noticed that my manicures have lasted 2-3 days longer than usual with this top coat.

So there you go! 10 monthly favorites. See ya around!

Wrinkles, oh wrinkles

/ Sunday, February 16, 2014 /
Confession: I've always associated wrinkles with old people. Growing up, I would hear my mother become super sad whenever she got a new wrinkle. Her laments helped reinforce the fact that we all eventually become old and saggy.

When I started medical school, I encountered a very diverse group of students. Students from age 20 to 36 were included in my class. People who graduated several years early and people who came back to school after putting in years of hard work in their previous careers. Some students looked very young, like they could be in middle school; others looked like they could be those so-called middle school students' parents.

I never thought I looked old though. Just a few months ago I was mistaken for a high-schooler in my hometown. However, yesterday, when I looked in the mirror, I noticed it. Just like my mother had lamented, I too recognized my first wrinkle on my forehead. Yikes. I had grown old.

Honestly, how old do I feel now though? I recently took this quiz on Buzzfeed. This quiz, titled "What age are you, really?" revealed that although I am only 23, I actually am a 41-year old. Yikes. I've always known that medical school, despite its exciting nature and intricate details, always took a toll on me, and that included a physical aspect. During these past 1.5 years, I've have hefty times of extreme stress, crazy times of upheaval and sadness, intense moments of happiness and satisfaction, arduous study hours, and all the like. Getting yelled at by superiors for making the same mistakes every medical student makes. Dealing with family problems and personal problems. Renovating multiple parts of my condo despite the fact that I don't own it. Financial problems of a typical medical student. Did medical school really age me that much? Had all of these educational endeavors taken such a heavy toll?

I don't know. Perhaps that quiz isn't that accurate. Perhaps it's the fact that my life was just meant to be like this. Like mother, like daughter. History repeats upon itself, despite the fact that I regularly use all of those retinols and skincare goodness.

Medical school is supposed to be one of the hardest educational tracks to pursue in the world. Some taut it to be even more difficult than graduate school and professional schools (JD, MBA, etc). Is it the root cause of my physical deterioration? Or is it that the Texas sun has completely underminded my body despite my Asian genes, and has decided to give me problems at age 23?

All summed up in some random forehead wrinkles. Bleeh.

The Sunscreen Project, Part 32: Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 PA+++, No. 23

/ Thursday, July 18, 2013 /
I've always been fascinated by Asian cosmetic, skincare, and beauty products in general. It may seem ironic, but despite being Asian, I haven't used a lot of Asian skincare products. Perhaps it's something about me being in America, perhaps it's me not being exposed to Asian brands other than perhaps Shiseido and Dr. Jart+, but anyway the mystical East has always been a fascination.

I had been looking for a BB cream, and I knew that after the couple I tried from Sephora, I wanted to try one directly from Asia. One that wasn't told at Sephora.

Thus, voila!

20130627_020745
FTC: I purchased this product with my own money. I am not compensated for any reviews.

20130627_020817

20130627_020823

Missha is a Korean company that specializes in beauty products. The Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream was touted to be best offered by the company. Seeing rave reviews across most of the entire WWW made me even more inclined to get it.

It was $30 for 50 ml on the site, but I decided to get mine on Ebay instead. $15, including shipping!

I got shade No. 23 because it seemed closest to bloggers and YouTubers with a skin shade similar to my own. This was especially because it seemed that No 23 was also good for yellow skin toned people (and I believe, as of right now, that my skin tone is yellow).

Of course, here's the ingredients list, from MakeupAlley

Water (Aqua), Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Cetyl PEF/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Zinc Oxide, Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Arbutin, Magnesium Aluminium Silicate, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Hydrolysed Collagen, Rosa Rubiginosa Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Squalane, Caviar Extract, Adenosine, Algae Extract, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Fagus Sylvatica Bud Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ceramide 3, Chamomila Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Fragrance (Parfum), Triethanolamine, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Salicylate, Hydroxycitronellal, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Citronellol. MAY CONTAIN [ /-; Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)]

A cursory glance shows that there are a lot of silicone-based ingredients that provide a silky finish. Skin protectants such as dimethicone are also present. There isn't a separate part of the list for the "active ingredients" but I can see on the list that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are present. Yay for zinc oxide!

Thus, every morning for 1.5 weeks, I applied two squirts of this product (that came with a pump). What did I find?

Pros:
  • Provides high UVA and UVB ray coverage (SPF 42, PA+++)
  • Fit my skin tone very well, even better than the Smashbox, Shiseido, and Dr. Jart+ ones I tried earlier
  • Provides medium coverage
  • Lasted 8 hours
  • Did not make me break out
  • Since it is a physical sunscreen (with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), you will start receiving UV ray production immediately upon application (do not need to wait ~25 min for protection to start like you do for chemical sunscreens)
Neutrals:
  • Originally had a more grayish tint upon initial application, but then blended in my face well
  • Has a light scent, which may be a turn-off for some folks
  • Has a lot of oils and plant extracts that some people may find irritating
Cons:
  • A bit thick for my taste, being thicker than the other BB creams I've tried [feels like a zinc oxide sunscreen (which it basically is!)]
  • Slightly drying to my skin (which has become more dry throughout this past 1/2 year)
Bottom line? This is the best BB cream I've used yet. I think I'll probably buy 1 tube per year or something to use. I definitely recommend this to people of all skin types who aren't allergic to the plant extracts in the ingredients list. I hope that starting in MS-2 year (2nd year of medical school) I won't have to go into Gross Anatomy lab as much (perhaps 1x/week instead of 5) so hopefully my skin won't be as dry for this. Yahoo!

My night routine (requested)

/ Friday, July 12, 2013 /
One of my friends requested that I do a "Night Routine" post - namely, all of the products I use to prepare for the night, before bed. All righty, so here we go!

Note: These products are what I use nightly as of this post. I sometimes change up products depending if I'm testing something or otherwise. This post includes both my face and body routine (namely, my entire shower routine)

1. Remove eye make-up: Typical cotton rounds + 1:1 olive oil:witch hazel. Cotton rounds = $2.50 for 100 pack, while olive oil is $5 for 25 fl oz (generic brand) and witch hazel is $3 for 16 fl oz.

Now into the shower I go!

2. Tresemme Luxurious Moisture Shampoo - this has been the same shampoo I've used for quite awhile now. It's cheap and effective. I'm hoping to start using one soon that doesn't have SLS or SLES in it, though. This is a very cheap shampoo - $3 for 32 fl oz.

3. Nature's Gate Papaya Body Wash - Papaya is a very good desquamator/exfoliant and naturally lightens the skin. I really enjoy this body wash, even though it is a bit pricey, at least according to drugstore standards ($7 for 18 fl oz)

4. Missha Near Skin Extra Renew Cleansing Foam - this is one of the first Asian skincare/cosmetic products I have purchased in full-size (other than the Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream). So far I have really liked it. Its original price is $18 for 150 ml (approximately 5 fl oz) but I bought it 50% off for $9. Thus, the price is a bit steep but I thought it would be worth the try. It has proven so far to be pretty good, and I'm pretty pleased with it. It's awesome for sensitive and sensitized skin types!

5. Tresemme Luxurious Moisture Conditioner - this is also a very budget-friendly conditioner that actually works very well. It costs $3 for 32 fl oz. Quite nice.

6. Brush teeth - I like to brush my teeth in the shower while I let the conditioner sit in my hair. This way I can "deep condition" the hair better and let the conditioner sink further into the hair. Toothpaste is whatever type of Crest or Colgate I can get my hands on, and toothbrush is whatever Oral-B or whatever I like. Prices are drugstore-variable.

7. Floss - Flossing is a very important part of dental hygiene. I really recommend the Oral-B Glide Floss - I've tried so many kinds over the years and so far this has proven to be the best. Sells for $7 for a two-pack at Drugstore.com.

Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Floss, Original - 1 ea

8. Mouthwash - I like Listerine a lot. Prices vary depending on if you go to the drugstore vs. supermarket vs. Costco/Sams.

9. Earth Therapeutics Foot Scrub - I actually use this product to desquamate my underarm areas in order to get rid of dead skin cells. This prevents ingrown hairs. Ironic how a foot scrub is used for this, huh? Lolz. $7 for 4 fl oz.
Earth Therapeutics Refreshing Foot Scrub
And now, out of the shower I come!

10. Nature's Gate Deodorant in Autumn Breeze w/ Witch Hazel - I like this natural deodorant because it doesn't have aluminum in its ingredients (which has been controversial in its effects on breast cancer). I also like the fact that it makes me feel clean because it has witch hazel. $6 per stick.

11. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream - I've been using this retinol every night for a few months now. While it is a relatively expensive facial product for a drugstore product, it is relatively affordable as a retinol, and has proven very helpful with smoothing out my skin and promoting skin turnover. I bought mine for $13 on Ebay.

12. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion - I actually use this product as an eye cream. Ironic huh? In reality, I've found that it works just as well as some of the eye creams I've used, and it doesn't make me break out. Plus, it's perhaps 50X cheaper than some eye creams that work to the same ability. Lolz. I bought 2-pack of  the full-sized product (two 18 fl oz bottles, aka 36 fl oz in total) for about $15 at Costco. Super affordable.

13. Body lotion - Curel Intensive Healing - lately my skin has become pretty dry, and my arms and legs are no exception. I'm currently trying out several Curel lotions due to their touted effects of being very effective and hypoallergenic to many skin types. In my opinion, this brand is very comparable to Eucerin and equally (if not more) affordable. The only thing I don't like about this product is that it is in jar packaging (more likely to get bacterial contaminants in) but I guess this is the one downside I've found so far. I believe it's sold for slightly under $10 for a large jar (16 fl oz) at any drugstore.

14. Hair serum - Bioinfusion Critical Hair Serum - I've used this product for a couple of months now and it's really helped me preserve my hair's health and helped prevent split ends. Yay!

15. Dermstore Lip Quench Lip Treatment - I recently finished my C.O. Bigelow Lip Cream from Bath & Body Works, so this is the next product in that I found to replace it. This product is much thicker than the BBW lip cream, but it still works very effectively and definitely is incredibly moisturizing.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my night time routine! Yes, very long and very many products, but it's helped me (1) establish good hygiene habits and (2) preserve the health of my skin, teeth, and hair. Yep yep!

The Sunscreen Project, Part 29: Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse BB Cream SPF 25 PA++

Dr. Jart+ - Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25 PA++
FTC: I received a sample of this product from Sephora. I am not paid for any reviews.

I was introduced to the BB cream craze through several of my friends who swear by their use. Like many of you may already know, BB cream stands for "Beauty Balm" or "Blemish Balm" cream. It was originally created by a German physician who prescribed/sold it to her patients who wanted to recover from skin laser surgery. Known for their SPF, protection, brightening, illuminizing, and other properties, BB creams exploded across Asia, Europe, and eventually the rest of the world.

Asian BB creams are known often for their "mystical" properties as well as their notoriety for lack of many shades, specifically lack of BB creams for darker skin shades. American BB creams are notorious for being called as relabeled tinted moisturizers and overemphasis/overexaggeration of the all-encompassing effects that purport to give.

Due to these factors, I was quite hesitant to try this line of products. However, the other day I was at Sephora and a lady really recommended me to try this product, so I decided to go for it. After all, my skin has changed type (going to more of a dry type with the occasional pimple or two per month or something). Also, I did like the fact that it gave more coverage and allowed for me to have a more smooth face. In addition, I liked that a lot of them had a high SPF coverage.

Thus, this is the first BB cream I am reviewing.

Dr. Jart is an Asian brand that spread to the US en masse.

Ingredients list:

-Octinoxate, Octisalate, Titanium Dioxide: Provide sunscreen protection.
-Hyaluronic Acid and Sea Water Extract: Increase skin's moisture content.
-Aloe & Portulaca Oleracea : Soothe, calm, and treat redness.

Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, SD Alcohol 40-B, Dimethicone, Talc, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cyclohexasiloxane, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Sodium Citrate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Citric Acid, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sea Water, Ethyl Menthane Carboxamide, Silica, Hexyl Laurate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate , Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate,Disodium, EDTA, Methylparaben, Chlorphenesin, Butylparaben, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide.
Initial inspection of the ingredients list:
  • Low SPF UVB coverage - it is listed at SPF 25, which is below the US FDA recommendation of SPF 30. This is provided by octinoxate and octisalate.
  • Incomplete SPF UVA coverage - TiO2 only provides partial coverage for UVA rays, and is not as effective as zinc oxide at providing coverage.
  • Lots of other parabens and other ingredients
  • Interesting extracts of the citric acid, leaf juice of aloe, portulaca oleracea, etc (though their concentrations, efficacies, and potential synergistic effects with one another are not listed)
  • Glycerin for humectant properties
  • A bunch of silicone-based products to give that smooth-feeling skin and illumination effect
So what did I think when I actually tried this product?

Pros:
  • Really smoothed out my skin
  • Didn't make me break out
  • Non-comedogenic on my skin
  • SPF coverage - but note that this is because I apply these spf-based products very liberally - 1/4 teaspoon to cover my face, not just enough to cover my skin lightly since I want to get the full SPF effect.
Cons:
  • Lack of multiple shades - this doesn't affect me as much, since I have relatively light skin (my friends consider me to be a "pale Asian" in Texas's Sunbelt and I am a NC-25 or NC-30 depending on summer vs. winter and how much I spend indoors due to med school and stuff). However, darker girls may have trouble finding optimal shades.
  • Price - $34 for 1.7 fl oz. Wow. Well, this is supposed to be one of the better BB creams that Sephora offers, so perhaps the price is there.
Bottom line - although I do appreciate that this BB cream did seem to provide most of the benefits that BB creams are purported to be, I think I will pass this product due to its incomplete UV coverage and its lower SPF value. I am definitely willing to splurge a bit for SPF products but at the same time I want to make sure I get the most complete coverage I can with the SPF products I get.
/ Friday, January 4, 2013 /
All right guys and gals,

Time for some up-closeness. I'm gonna share with you some pictures that I haven't really shared with anyone else, pictures of my skin and how it's doing.

In case you don't know already, my skin type is combination/oily, acne-prone. This means that the areas around my cheeks are generally acne-free, but my T-zone (my forehead, nose, between eyes, chin, etc) is a constant war zone filled with acne problems. Not only that, the edges of my face often get acne as well.

In order to improve this, during the last 5+ years I've been trying all sorts of skincare products, regiments, lifestyle changes, etc. I've thrown tons and tons of money (or at least as much as I've been able to) to the skincare industry. This skincare blog is definitely a big part of it - detailing the progression of my skin, the products I've tried and the results I've gotten from them, as well as lots of facts I've learned about skincare in general throughout the years.

Now, without further ado, here are the pics I have. Promise: they are NOT photoshopped in any way whatsoever. I took them with the webcam from my new computer (still transitioning to Windows 8), which is probably the best camera I could find where I could properly control (as much as I could) self-taken photos.

For makeup: I do have some eye makeup on (eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, undereye concealer, brow powder) but nothing else. No foundation, bronzer, blush, face primer, powder, etc. I do, however, have sunscreen on (I wear it everyday).

picture016

Here's a very closeup pic of my forehead. As you can see I have some little bumps on my forehead. These are part of the acne I battle all the time. I try to approach acne from a preventative standpoint - aka try to get rid of them before they erupt as serious, vibrant pustules. You can also see an acne scar between the top of my nose area and my right eye (hyperpigmentation). These pictures were actually taken post-fall semester of MS-1, after my acne had subsided a lot (due to high cortisol levels from med school stress of exams and beyond). Thus you are seeing my skin in the best light it has been in for months.

picture017

Here's a view of the right side of my face. Generally acne-free but you can see acne on my chin and in the area next to my eyes.

picture018

Here's a picture of the left side of my face. Generally same conclusions as the right side, except there's less acne around the eye area periphery.

picture019

My chin area: as you can see there are quite a lot of acne marks and scars, especially compared to the rest of my face. I don't think my webcam does the marks/scars justice - there are actually a lot more than are actually shown - objectively probably 3x more. I've been trying different things for years to try to get rid of this, but these are the results I've had.

Overall I think my skin is okay. At least it has gotten a lot better since my middle/high school years. As you can see in the archives of this blog, I've gone through a lot of products. I'll definitely keep on trying new things as time goes on!

Question: can anyone tell me whether I have warm, cool, or neutral skintones? I can't really tell. I understand that most people automatically assume East Asians have yellow skintones but as shown on Musicalhouses this is not always the case. I think I have pinkish undertones but I'm not exactly sure.

In case if anyone wishes to know:
