Review: Maybelline Colossal Waterproof Mascara

/ Thursday, June 14, 2012 /
Okay, so here's a long overdue post about the latest mascara I've tried, Maybelline's Colossal Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black.

 Source: 1

Sometime around February, I picked up this mascara from Walmart for about $7. Personally, I think it was a pretty good deal - especially because it was cheaper than what I would've gotten it for at CVS or Walgreens. I got the waterproof kind because I have super short, stick-straight eyelashes that need a lot of support and shaping. Somehow, the waterproof kind usually doesn't smear as much as the other kinds. This mascara was recommended to me by one of my readers awhile ago, but I didn't get a chance to purchase it until February.

I put this mascara on just about everyday for the next 4 months. Yes, I know, I should've thrown it out at the 3 month mark, but I had surgery and was super busy, so I didn't get a chance to go to the store to get a new one. I think I'll get a new one after I recover fully from the surgery, probably sometime in July or something, before med school starts.

Anyway, I would usually put this mascara in the morning during my morning routine, and then wear it for an entire day. In total, usually around 12 hours or so. During each use, I would use my ELF eyelash curler to curl my lashes for about 15 seconds, sometimes with a hair dryer, and then put on this mascara with full sweeps of the wand.

So, let me tell you the results.

First, I've got to say, that this mascara is pretty messy. When I mean messy, I mean when I first take the wand out of the container. There's a ton of extra mascara on the wand that clumps on, so you actually have to wipe the mascara wand on the inner part of the tube in order to prevent the extra mascara from piling up on your eyelashes and clumping them.

See what I mean?

When I put mascara onto my eyes, I usually coat my lashes one time, and one time ONLY. This is because I noticed that when I put on a second coat, the first coat would just clump off and come off of my lashes in bits and pieces. Pretty gross. So, thus, I just put on one coat.

Anyway, I noticed right away that this mascara did not give me as much length and volume as my Falsies Mascara did. However, it did give my lashes a bit of volume. It definitely did not elicit an allergic response, like Covergirl's LashBlast did. And it definitely was more effective than Almay's One Coat mascara.

Comparison of the Falsies and the Colossal

The Colossal's staying power, however, was pretty good. The mascara did not hold my curl as well as the Falsies did, but it still held the curl relatively well, at least compared to the other mascaras I've tried. And it did last me an entire 12 hours of use.

Removing the mascara, however, was a pain in the butt. I had to use excessive amounts of olive oil in order to get rid of it all, and it came out in clumps. Still, I think it was worth it. The staying power of the Colossal is definitely pretty good.

All in all, what do I think of this mascara? Well, I've got to say that this is probably my second favorite, after the Falsies. However, I don't think I will be repurchasing this mascara anytime in the near future; I'm still searching for my HG mascara.

What do you guys/gals think I should try next? I don't think I want to try the LashBlast series any time in the near future, and since I'm going to be going to med school soon, I'll need to get a mascara that is long-lasting and is relatively hypoallergenic. Any advice on what kind to get? Leave a comment!

Review: Keracolor Color Enhancing Leave-in Treatment, Natural

/ Sunday, June 10, 2012 /

Received from MyGlam March bag

I received product from my March MyGlam bag.

My first thought: Oh! Kind of cool! Some kind of treatment for my hair!

Unfortunately, that was not the case in the long-run, when I actually tried out the product.

To use this product, you first open both sides of the package, then mix the two products from the packets together. I did that. Then, you rub it into your hair, and let it stay.

Oh my goodness! Yikes!

Even before I put the stuff into my hair, I smelled a strong chemical smell from the material, which at first I thought was fine. However, the stuff made my hair itch after awhile, and then made my scalp itch. Ugh. I actually have pretty good hair, like, long, shiny, dark brown East Asian hair. And it made it feel kind of icky and disgusting, as if I had gotten it dyed using some sort of strong chemical dye or something.

I eventually washed it out by shampooing my hair 2X and using conditioner.

Overall, what do I think of the product? Not a good rating. I know that MyGlam is a service that is trying to help people find and try out new products, so naturally I do not blame them for this. However, as for me, I threw the rest of the sample away. No thank you, not for me.

Cost: $38 per bottle (online at the Keracolor website)

No full-size purchase for me, definitely.

Review: Murad Eye Lift Perfector

/ Friday, June 8, 2012 /
Murad Eye Lift Perfector Natural

I got a sample of this "Eye Perfector", aka concealer, from my March MyGlam Bag.

Cost: $38 on for 0.06 oz

According to the MyGlam website, this product is supposed to be a concealer that "follows the natural tint of your skin". Aka, it doesn't have to be color matched to be a particular skin color; it will just blend itself right in.

I used this to cover up my dark circles just like I normally would. I dabbed a bit of it onto my undereye circles and used it in conjunction with my normal Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer.

Results?

Well, I'll tell you this for sure. It does match pretty well to my skin, but at a price. Granted, it did blend into my skin and did not look like I had giant white circles under my eyes or something. However, it was extremely sheer and did not provide a lot of coverage. The reason why I had to use the Maybelline concealer was because the Eye Perfector was not covering enough. (I have super dark eye circles, fyi).

I also noticed that after ~1 hr, the material started to get cakey onto my skin. It was not because of the Maybelline concealer; I tried it with and without the Maybelline (meaning, the Murad by itself, the Murad + Maybelline, the Maybelline by itself) both times with the Murad it got cakey, chalky. I'm not sure why, but that was just the case. And I personally don't like that feeling.

So, thus, what are the pros and cons?
Pros: Blends in nicely with skin tone
Con: Becomes cakey/caked onto the skin after awhile, doesn't last very long
Neutral (could be pro or con): Has very sheer coverage

Who would it be good for? People who don't have extremely dark undereye circles and have fair to medium skin.

Would I purchase this again? What do you think, 0.06 oz for $38? That's $633 for just one ounce of product. That's absolutely ridiculous. But hey, if you have the money and like the pros and don't mind the cons, then I guess, go for it?

Apologies

/ Friday, June 1, 2012 /
Hey guys and gals,

I really want to apologize for my recent lack of posts. I recently had surgery and am at home, recovering. I will attempt to update more frequently, and put out more blog posts, but please forgive me if I cannot!

Random recent facts:
1. I just recently knitted a 6-foot scarf (in a perhaps futile effort to increase the agility of my hands to prep for all surgical-ly things to come).
2. Hot wing sauce has become quite awesome.
3. Have not really worn makeup in the last 3 weeks (due to the surgery and everything afterwards).
4. Still break out occasionally on my chin, and other parts of my face, during random moments of time.

I will leave you guys and gals with a few songs that I really like/recently discovered/are old favorites. Rock on everyone!
