My night routine (requested)

/ Friday, July 12, 2013 /
One of my friends requested that I do a "Night Routine" post - namely, all of the products I use to prepare for the night, before bed. All righty, so here we go!

Note: These products are what I use nightly as of this post. I sometimes change up products depending if I'm testing something or otherwise. This post includes both my face and body routine (namely, my entire shower routine)

1. Remove eye make-up: Typical cotton rounds + 1:1 olive oil:witch hazel. Cotton rounds = $2.50 for 100 pack, while olive oil is $5 for 25 fl oz (generic brand) and witch hazel is $3 for 16 fl oz.

Now into the shower I go!

2. Tresemme Luxurious Moisture Shampoo - this has been the same shampoo I've used for quite awhile now. It's cheap and effective. I'm hoping to start using one soon that doesn't have SLS or SLES in it, though. This is a very cheap shampoo - $3 for 32 fl oz.

3. Nature's Gate Papaya Body Wash - Papaya is a very good desquamator/exfoliant and naturally lightens the skin. I really enjoy this body wash, even though it is a bit pricey, at least according to drugstore standards ($7 for 18 fl oz)

4. Missha Near Skin Extra Renew Cleansing Foam - this is one of the first Asian skincare/cosmetic products I have purchased in full-size (other than the Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream). So far I have really liked it. Its original price is $18 for 150 ml (approximately 5 fl oz) but I bought it 50% off for $9. Thus, the price is a bit steep but I thought it would be worth the try. It has proven so far to be pretty good, and I'm pretty pleased with it. It's awesome for sensitive and sensitized skin types!

5. Tresemme Luxurious Moisture Conditioner - this is also a very budget-friendly conditioner that actually works very well. It costs $3 for 32 fl oz. Quite nice.

6. Brush teeth - I like to brush my teeth in the shower while I let the conditioner sit in my hair. This way I can "deep condition" the hair better and let the conditioner sink further into the hair. Toothpaste is whatever type of Crest or Colgate I can get my hands on, and toothbrush is whatever Oral-B or whatever I like. Prices are drugstore-variable.

7. Floss - Flossing is a very important part of dental hygiene. I really recommend the Oral-B Glide Floss - I've tried so many kinds over the years and so far this has proven to be the best. Sells for $7 for a two-pack at Drugstore.com.

Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Floss, Original - 1 ea

8. Mouthwash - I like Listerine a lot. Prices vary depending on if you go to the drugstore vs. supermarket vs. Costco/Sams.

9. Earth Therapeutics Foot Scrub - I actually use this product to desquamate my underarm areas in order to get rid of dead skin cells. This prevents ingrown hairs. Ironic how a foot scrub is used for this, huh? Lolz. $7 for 4 fl oz.
Earth Therapeutics Refreshing Foot Scrub
And now, out of the shower I come!

10. Nature's Gate Deodorant in Autumn Breeze w/ Witch Hazel - I like this natural deodorant because it doesn't have aluminum in its ingredients (which has been controversial in its effects on breast cancer). I also like the fact that it makes me feel clean because it has witch hazel. $6 per stick.

11. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream - I've been using this retinol every night for a few months now. While it is a relatively expensive facial product for a drugstore product, it is relatively affordable as a retinol, and has proven very helpful with smoothing out my skin and promoting skin turnover. I bought mine for $13 on Ebay.

12. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion - I actually use this product as an eye cream. Ironic huh? In reality, I've found that it works just as well as some of the eye creams I've used, and it doesn't make me break out. Plus, it's perhaps 50X cheaper than some eye creams that work to the same ability. Lolz. I bought 2-pack of  the full-sized product (two 18 fl oz bottles, aka 36 fl oz in total) for about $15 at Costco. Super affordable.

13. Body lotion - Curel Intensive Healing - lately my skin has become pretty dry, and my arms and legs are no exception. I'm currently trying out several Curel lotions due to their touted effects of being very effective and hypoallergenic to many skin types. In my opinion, this brand is very comparable to Eucerin and equally (if not more) affordable. The only thing I don't like about this product is that it is in jar packaging (more likely to get bacterial contaminants in) but I guess this is the one downside I've found so far. I believe it's sold for slightly under $10 for a large jar (16 fl oz) at any drugstore.

14. Hair serum - Bioinfusion Critical Hair Serum - I've used this product for a couple of months now and it's really helped me preserve my hair's health and helped prevent split ends. Yay!

15. Dermstore Lip Quench Lip Treatment - I recently finished my C.O. Bigelow Lip Cream from Bath & Body Works, so this is the next product in that I found to replace it. This product is much thicker than the BBW lip cream, but it still works very effectively and definitely is incredibly moisturizing.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my night time routine! Yes, very long and very many products, but it's helped me (1) establish good hygiene habits and (2) preserve the health of my skin, teeth, and hair. Yep yep!

Review: Maybelline Eye Studio Master Shape Brow Pencil - Dark Brown

/ Tuesday, July 9, 2013 /
A few weeks ago, I finished the Wet N' Wild ColorIcon Brow & Eyeliner in Dark Brown. I thus decided to hunt at the drugstore for a substitute eyebrow pencil. Hence, here you go!

20130622_093650
I chose this pencil because it was the only one that had a brow grooming end (I do not have a brow grooming brush). Upon opening the package, however, I was definitely surprised. Initial examination of this pencil felt weird; instead of wood, it was actually made of PLASTIC!

20130622_093710
I Had used it a little bit but then it seemed really weird. How was I supposed to sharpen the tip? Was this pencil only good for ~3 uses?

Well, eventually I found out online that you were actually supposed to sharpen the plastic. Weird but I tried it with my normal pencil sharpener for cosmetics and it worked. Thank goodness.

I definitely like the fact that the brush had a brow groomer - a 2-in-1 in some ways.

How did it perform though?

Pros:
  1. Was very dark and waxy on my brows
  2. Long-lasting
  3. Did not easily smudge
Cons:
  1. Relatively expensive for a drugstore brow pencil ($7 while there were others for less than $3)
  2. Feels weird to sharpen a "plastic" pencil
Bottom line, I think this pencil is an interesting phenomenon to try. I will, however, probably invest in a brow pencil and stick to wooden brow pencils from now on.

Massive haul

I don't do many haul videos but lately I've purchased several products and I feel that it is a good time to post everything.

The Sunscreen Project, Part 30: La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 60 + Anti-Aging Primer SPF 50

/ Wednesday, July 3, 2013 /

At a fundraiser hosted by my school's Dermatology Interest Group, I was given several samples of these two products to try and evaluate. They were handed to me by two very well-known dermatologists in the local community!

I have heard of La Roche-Posay before from Jerlene's favorite products on her blog, Musicalhouses. It is a highly-touted European brand that is generally on the more expensive side. Nonetheless, since I got these samples, I thought it'd be a great idea to review them.

Sunscreen:

Active Ingredients: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate (15%), Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 5%, Oxybenzone 6%

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Alcohol Denatured, Silica, Dicaprylyl Ether, Styrene Acrylates Copolymer, Diethylhexyl Syringylidenemalonate, PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Dimethicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Nylon-12, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Phenoxyethanol, Lauryl PEG/PPG 18/18 Methicone, Sodium Chloride, Caprylyl Glycol, Methylparaben, Poly C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Disodium EDTA, Cassia Alata (Candle Tree) Leaf Extract, Maltodextrin, Dodecene, Poloxamer 407

Price: $23.60 for 1.7 fl oz at Drugstore.com

Primer:

Active Ingredients: Avobenzene 3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 5%, Oxybenzone 6%.

Inactive Ingredients: Dimethicone, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Talc, Diisopropyl Sebacate, Silica Silylate, Glycerin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Water, Diethylhexyl Sryingylidenemalonate, Cassia Alata Leaf Extract, Maltodextrin.

Price: $39.99 for 1.35 fl oz at Ulta

As one can see, from the above lists, both the primer and the sunscreen have a lot of silicone-based ingredients that provide for a smooth, silky finish. A lot of skin protectants are mentioned with the methicone-based products. As listed above, the sunscreens are chemically-based - meaning no zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

The primer notes that it is not sufficient by itself as a sunscreen - that after all, it is supposed to be a primer.

Pros:

  • Really smooth, silky finish with hydrating factors
  • Primer was really smooth and allowed for a great add-on with the sunscreen
  • Primer allowed sunscreen to adhere to the skin and stay on for a long time
  • No white cast
  • Did not make my skin break out, even after 2 weeks of use.
  • Primer allowed for great oil control
  • High SPF and PA factors
  • Primer allowed for great coverage
Cons:
  • Pretty pricey
  • Skin could not breathe as well with the double-layering of the ingredients
  • Oxybenzone controversy
Overall, I think these are great products to use that I would recommend for people of any skin type, as well as people who don't want to use a BB cream but still want coverage. Of course, the price is there, but overall I think it's worth it.

The Sunscreen Project, Part 29: Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse BB Cream SPF 25 PA++

Dr. Jart+ - Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25 PA++
FTC: I received a sample of this product from Sephora. I am not paid for any reviews.

I was introduced to the BB cream craze through several of my friends who swear by their use. Like many of you may already know, BB cream stands for "Beauty Balm" or "Blemish Balm" cream. It was originally created by a German physician who prescribed/sold it to her patients who wanted to recover from skin laser surgery. Known for their SPF, protection, brightening, illuminizing, and other properties, BB creams exploded across Asia, Europe, and eventually the rest of the world.

Asian BB creams are known often for their "mystical" properties as well as their notoriety for lack of many shades, specifically lack of BB creams for darker skin shades. American BB creams are notorious for being called as relabeled tinted moisturizers and overemphasis/overexaggeration of the all-encompassing effects that purport to give.

Due to these factors, I was quite hesitant to try this line of products. However, the other day I was at Sephora and a lady really recommended me to try this product, so I decided to go for it. After all, my skin has changed type (going to more of a dry type with the occasional pimple or two per month or something). Also, I did like the fact that it gave more coverage and allowed for me to have a more smooth face. In addition, I liked that a lot of them had a high SPF coverage.

Thus, this is the first BB cream I am reviewing.

Dr. Jart is an Asian brand that spread to the US en masse.

Ingredients list:

-Octinoxate, Octisalate, Titanium Dioxide: Provide sunscreen protection.
-Hyaluronic Acid and Sea Water Extract: Increase skin's moisture content.
-Aloe & Portulaca Oleracea : Soothe, calm, and treat redness.

Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenyl Trimethicone, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, SD Alcohol 40-B, Dimethicone, Talc, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cyclohexasiloxane, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Sodium Citrate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Citric Acid, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sea Water, Ethyl Menthane Carboxamide, Silica, Hexyl Laurate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate , Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate,Disodium, EDTA, Methylparaben, Chlorphenesin, Butylparaben, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide.
Initial inspection of the ingredients list:
  • Low SPF UVB coverage - it is listed at SPF 25, which is below the US FDA recommendation of SPF 30. This is provided by octinoxate and octisalate.
  • Incomplete SPF UVA coverage - TiO2 only provides partial coverage for UVA rays, and is not as effective as zinc oxide at providing coverage.
  • Lots of other parabens and other ingredients
  • Interesting extracts of the citric acid, leaf juice of aloe, portulaca oleracea, etc (though their concentrations, efficacies, and potential synergistic effects with one another are not listed)
  • Glycerin for humectant properties
  • A bunch of silicone-based products to give that smooth-feeling skin and illumination effect
So what did I think when I actually tried this product?

Pros:
  • Really smoothed out my skin
  • Didn't make me break out
  • Non-comedogenic on my skin
  • SPF coverage - but note that this is because I apply these spf-based products very liberally - 1/4 teaspoon to cover my face, not just enough to cover my skin lightly since I want to get the full SPF effect.
Cons:
  • Lack of multiple shades - this doesn't affect me as much, since I have relatively light skin (my friends consider me to be a "pale Asian" in Texas's Sunbelt and I am a NC-25 or NC-30 depending on summer vs. winter and how much I spend indoors due to med school and stuff). However, darker girls may have trouble finding optimal shades.
  • Price - $34 for 1.7 fl oz. Wow. Well, this is supposed to be one of the better BB creams that Sephora offers, so perhaps the price is there.
Bottom line - although I do appreciate that this BB cream did seem to provide most of the benefits that BB creams are purported to be, I think I will pass this product due to its incomplete UV coverage and its lower SPF value. I am definitely willing to splurge a bit for SPF products but at the same time I want to make sure I get the most complete coverage I can with the SPF products I get.
